Amy Lee Hammond, Born Moree – grew up Wellington. Work in Aboriginal Theatre supporting artists to tell our stories.
“It has taken me 27 years to track where I am from. My great grandmother Daisy Hammond (Flick Moran Smith) was stolen from Kempsey as a baby. Her mother Connie Smith died due to childbirth related injuries. daisy was taken by a black couple, Walter Flick, who was a tracker working for Moree Police. Daisy had six kids, one my grandmother Yevone Hammond who had 11 kids. Mu father is the eldest and all born and bred on Moree mission. My father had four kids, my brother and I are the eldest grandchildren. I take my role very seriously, my place as eldest granddaughter. I grew up confused about my identity and have been through a lot of pain as a result. I feel now I have found my true belonging though I am just a baby – with my knowledge in what I know. My family, now 4 future and especially my future kids will always know their history.”
